Uranium Mining in South Australia

Posted on: July 20, 2009

Would the Greens actually know anything about uranium and its radioactive impact other than the bogeys of Hiroshima, Chernobyl or Three Mile? The Greens raise the spectre of pollution of the groundwaters of the Artesian Basin, which may be a valid argument, but only if tested.Yet these waters already have higher levels of radioactivity due to the deposits in the geostrata that are to be mined. The most important radionuclides in water are radium-226, radium-228, uranium-234, uranium-238 and a gas, radon-222. The details are too extensive for here but can be found on the web. The acid in situ process relies upon extraction of the mix and increasing the pH at the extraction site to remediate, a much safer process than extracting the ore to an acid heap leach on the surface as is frequently the method of extracting gold from ore by leaching cyanide through the heap. The Greens have broadened their opposition and campaign way outside their knowledge or understanding of the issues sufficient to influence public opinion leading to policy. While lunging at environmental issues, they are poorly positioned to support true conservation for the reasons that are necessary to do so. If the Greens are to launch themselves up to the next level of credibility, it will require more careful and more thorough analysis of statements they make, greater study and understanding of issues and much broader knowledge of the range of problem solving alternatives – which so far are not evident.
