SA Prisons Crowded

Posted on: July 18, 2009

It is a simple fact that for the past few years South Australia is broke and the proposed five new prisons “to be completed by 2014” are in the same theatricals of the $20 billion infrastructure of the mining boom, the $1.3 billion desal plant and the $1.7 billion hospital etc.

The Labor Government has a current unfunded debt of more than $8 billion for liabilities of the public service, more than $1.2 billion unfunded liability for work cover and pays out $285 million a year to 125,000 public service recipients at a time when the tax take is shrinking, but more enlightening is the detail. A 33 per cent increase in the number re-offending suggests the parole board be scrapped, escapes from custody doubled, double staff assaults, and .two riots  There have been seven escapes. The Minister says “the figures are misleading because they refer to the design of the prisons which are only 95 per cent occupied “. Have I missed something?

Prison should not be a pleasant place. It is a place of both retribution and repentance. It should never be so comfortable or convenient that it serves as cheap alternative accommodation for the inmates. It must not be a place of cruelty, but must be a place of hardship, discomfort and difficulty. It should not serve as a cheap default education system either. It is not suitable as a place of last resort for the mentally ill. A prisoner should not profit from his crimes, except that he learn to forsake them. Those that will not learn shall repeat the exercise until they do.. Capital punishment must remain a viable option for the most heinous crimes, including treason.
